Grupo Calvo’s adhesion to this campaign is a reflection of the commitment maintained by the canning company to sustainability, an aspect which, along with taste, convenience and health, constitutes one of its four main pillars, the cornerstones of product development.
In 2018, Grupo Calvo launched the first canned tropical tuna marketed in Spain featuring the blue MSC sustainable fishing label: MSC Eco-Tuna. This product contains tuna from the skipjack species (Katsuwonus pelamis). It is pole and line caught, a traditional and selective fishing method that enables fish to be caught individually, thereby meeting responsible and environmentally-friendly fishing criteria. It also delivers consumers additional value, including being packed in organic extra virgin olive oil produced naturally in Galicia. Derived from chemical-free farming that is respectful of the ecosystem, the oil used to pack this tuna is certified by the Regulatory Council of Organic Farming of Galicia (Craega).
Victoria Sánchez, Director of CSR and Communications for Grupo Calvo, expressed the following: “We launched our MSC eco-tuna in 2018 to offer more sustainability-conscious consumers an option that brings together all of our company’s commitments in the realm of sustainability and which is also backed by internationally recognised outside certification.”
