EDP launches a self-consumption facility for Nauterra in Galicia that will prevent the emission of 200 tons of CO2 per year
  • The facility will have an installed capacity of 1.150 MWp and an annual production of 1,290 MWh/year.
  • The industrial complex will also have 10 EDP charging points to support sustainable mobility for its employees.
  • In 2023, 86.76% of the total electricity consumed at Nauterra’s factories and offices worldwide came from renewable sources.

A Coruña, March 5, 2025. – Nauterra, a global food company specializing in canned fish and seafood, has partnered with EDP, a world leader in renewable energy, to launch its first photovoltaic installation at the company’s plant in Carballo (A Coruña).

The photovoltaic installation, developed by EDP for Nauterra, and already in operation, has a capacity of 1.150 MWp and an annual production of 1,290 MWh. Installed on the rooftop, it features over 2,550 solar panels and will enable Nauterra to save 10% of its annual electricity consumption.

Through this project, both companies reaffirm their commitment to one of their key strategic priorities: environmental protection. Thanks to the photovoltaic installation at the Carballo plant, more than 200 tons of CO2 emissions will be avoided each year—an impact on air quality equivalent to planting over 1,100 new trees. In addition, the company will promote sustainable mobility among its employees by installing 10 electric vehicle chargers with a capacity of 7.4 kW each.

As Mané Calvo, CEO of Nauterra, explains: “The installation of our first photovoltaic plant in Carballo will not only help reduce our carbon footprint, but also strengthens our commitment to a responsible business model. In doing so, we continue to move forward with our sustainability strategy, ‘Responsible Engagement,’ with the clear goal of generating a positive impact on society and the environment, embedding sustainability as a cross-cutting pillar in all our operations.”

‘Responsible Engagement’ is the ambitious sustainability program launched by Nauterra in 2019, aimed at reducing impact across three key areas: oceans, the environment, and people. The initiative promotes value creation for the business, society, and the environment through a management model rooted in responsibility. To date, the company has achieved eight of the 21 targets it set. Among its accomplishments, 86.76% of the total electricity consumed across the Group’s factories and offices in 2023 came from renewable sources.

According to Javier Cabezudo, director of the Corporate Clients Department at EDP Spain, “This project further demonstrates that decentralized renewable energy production will be one of the critical pillars to achieve our country’s carbon neutrality goals.”

In this case, the contractual modality is called “As a Service,” a model in which companies make no initial investment and benefit from clean energy generated directly at their facilities. EDP assumes 100% of the cost of the photovoltaic self-consumption infrastructure. The contract duration is 15 years, allowing the client to stabilize their energy costs in the long term.
