Nauterra receives 2025 Galicia Food Award
  • Over the past six years, the company has raised its waste recovery rate from 52% to 98%, consolidating a more efficient, circular production model.

Madrid, June 26, 2025 – Nauterra has received the 2025 Galicia Food Award for Sustainable Initiative, granted by the Galicia Food Cluster (Clusaga), in recognition of its ‘Nauterra Zero Waste’ project, which promotes a circular economy model throughout the group’s entire value chain.

Launched in 2017, ‘Nauterra Zero Waste’ has progressively transformed the company’s waste management with a comprehensive approach that prioritizes reduction, reuse, and material recovery. Since 2018, Nauterra has increased its waste recovery rate from 52% to over 98% in 2024. This progress has been made possible thanks to the engagement of all teams and a clear strategy focused on efficiency and respect for the environment.

The award ceremony took place in Santiago de Compostela as part of Clusaga’s annual gala, bringing together institutional representatives, leading companies in the sector, and organizations linked to agri-food innovation and sustainability. Representing the company, Mariví Sánchez, Nauterra’s director of Sustainability and Communications, accepted the award.

“It’s always special to receive recognition, but it’s even more meaningful when it comes from your own homeland,” noted Mariví Sánchez during the award presentation. ”Receiving the 2025 Sustainable Initiative Award is an honor that fills us with pride and strengthens our commitment to working in a way that creates a positive impact—grounded in responsibility, innovation, and a long-term vision.”

The project’s evolution reflects a profound transformation of the company’s production systems, with tangible impacts on waste reduction, efficient materials management, and the redesign of processes guided by circularity and continuous innovation criteria.

About ‘Nauterra Zero Waste’

The Nauterra Zero Waste project began in 2017 at the Carballo plant (A Coruña) and in the company’s offices in Galicia and Madrid, with the goal of ensuring efficient waste management and minimizing environmental impact. Since then, it has progressively expanded to the group’s other facilities in Latin America and Europe. In addition to establishing a recovery system that now exceeds 98%, the initiative has eliminated single-use materials, promoted proper waste segregation, and supported environmental awareness activities such as beach clean-ups and internal training.

It is therefore no surprise that Nauterra’s plants in Spain, specifically in Galicia, became the first in the canning industry to earn the ‘Zero Waste

Management’ certification awarded by Bureau Veritas, a global inspection and certification company, in 2022—a certification they have maintained ever since.
The project’s track record has been recognized on multiple occasions, with awards such as the go!ODS Prize (promoted by the Spanish Network of the United Nations Global Compact and the Rafael del Pino Foundation) and the award for best circular economy practice at the BASF Awards.
