It also has a significant content of B, D and E vitamins, as well as minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, iodine and selenium. Canned tuna is mostly made from tropical tuna. Katsuwonus pelamis. Also known as the skipjack tuna because of the stripes on its belly, its flesh is slightly darker in color than that of the other two species of tropical tuna and it has a more intense flavor. The skipjack tuna has a length of under a meter and weighs between 2 and 4 kilos. They swim both on the surface and at depths of 500 meters.

Thunnus albacares. Larger than the skipjack, this species of tuna with its characteristic yellow fins can reach 2 meters in length and weigh 50 kilos. Its usual habitat is warm waters and it typically swims in the top 100 meters of the water column.

Thunnus obesus. The bigeye species of tuna is similar in appearance to the yellowfin; however, unlike the latter, it inhabits mainly cold and deep waters, which accounts for its higher fat content. It can reach 2 to 3 meters in length and weigh more than 200 kilos.
